France intercepts an average of six drones a day near Olympic venues

Jul 23. () –

French acting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on Tuesday that since mid-July, French authorities have intercepted an average of six drones a day in the vicinity of the facilities where the Paris Olympic Games will be held from Friday.

Attal has acknowledged that the government expects that such incidents, probably caused by tourists or citizens who want to capture images of the area with their drones, could occur in the coming days, according to the BFMTV news channel.

French authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of these unmanned aerial vehicles, while the Ministry of Defence has stressed that only authorised devices can fly over Olympic venues.

Attal visited the Velizy-Villacoublay air base, located southwest of Paris, on Tuesday for a meeting focused specifically on the anti-drone system in view of the Olympic Games. Airspace control has reached “an unprecedented scale” for the sporting event.

The Olympic Games kick off on Friday in Paris, when some 40,000 members of the French security forces are expected to arrive in the capital. The French government, which took office after the last parliamentary elections, has made ensuring security during the Games a top priority.
