France detects "disinformation maneuvers" regarding the unrest in New Caledonia carried out from Azerbaijan

May 18. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The French agency responsible for fighting foreign digital interference, Viginum, has detected “disinformation maneuvers” on social networks regarding the unrest in New Caledonia and which have been orchestrated from accounts related to the Azeri government New Azerbaijan Party (YAP).

Viginum has detected “hundreds of posts” on the social networks of Facebook and according to a report from the agency cited by the French television network BFMTV.

In total, the agency has collected more than 5,000 messages from about 80 accounts and reproduced by more than 1,600 users in which separatist proclamations are launched, charges against “French colonialism” and calls for a boycott of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. .

According to Viginum, many of these accounts had previously published messages in favor of the boycott of the Paris Olympic Games by using videos about urban violence and attacking the French Police.

At least five people have died in the protests unleashed on the oceanic island over the reform that would expand the voter roll in the elections, which would reduce the influence of the native Kanaks, most of whom favor independence, in them.

The public disorders, which have left hundreds of people arrested and have caused fires, barricades and looting, have led the French Government to declare a twelve-day state of emergency and send police officers to the archipelago. In addition, they have prohibited access to the social network TikTok.
