France and Morocco continue their thaw with a visit by Burita to Paris

April 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Moroccan Foreign Minister, Naser Burita, made an official visit to France on Tuesday, in a new staging of the diplomatic thaw between two countries that, according to the head of French diplomacy, Stéphane Séjourné, share a “unique relationship.”

Séjourné already visited Rabat at the end of February, after personally assuming the initiative to relaunch bilateral relations between two traditional partners who had distanced themselves in recent years for political reasons.

This “dynamic” has continued with a working meeting in Paris, as the French minister has emphasized on social networks. The Government of Morocco has also reported on the meeting, with a brief message and the image of a symbolic handshake between the two ministers.

Among the objectives of the Alawite kingdom is some type of gesture on the part of France in relation to Western Sahara. In his recent trip, Séjourné underlined Paris' “clear and constant” support for the autonomy plan presented in 2007 by King Mohamed VI, without specifying that it is the best alternative to resolve the territorial dispute.

The French minister, in an interview this week with France 24, ruled out making any announcement and suggested that any decision of this caliber would depend on the heads of state. However, he did assume verbally that Morocco “economically develops” the former Spanish colony, at a time marked precisely by the pending decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on agreements that affect Western Sahara.

For the media related to the Government of Morocco, Séjourné's statements imply recognizing the “economic Moroccanness” of Western Sahara, as summarized by the 'le360' portal, considered close to the Royal House.
