It’s unclear whether Nissan has entered into talks with Foxconn or has already been rebuffed, but it likely couldn’t outbid Honda in a takeover battle given the ties between the two companies, the US business outlet reported.

The merger of Honda, Japan’s second-largest automaker, with Nissan, the third-largest, would be the biggest shakeup of the global auto industry since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA merged in 2021 to create Stellantis in a $52 billion deal. dollars.

“The rise of Chinese automakers and new players has changed the auto industry quite a bit,” said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe, citing technological trends of electrification and autonomous driving. “We have to develop capabilities to fight them in 2030, otherwise we will be defeated.”

The two companies would aim to achieve combined sales of 30 trillion yen, equivalent to about $191 billion, and operating profits of more than 3 trillion yen through the potential merger.
