The sports journalist Francys Romero broke the news on his social networks and sources close to the team, who preferred not to be identified, confirmed it to Marti News.
According to experts consulted by Romero, the four players have the potential to play as professionals, either in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States or in other leagues in the region.
With these four leaks, there are already 33 Cuban athletes who have decided to leave delegations so far in 2023 to carve out a path for themselves, without ties to the regime’s National Sports Institute (INDER).
The ten most recent leaks occurred in this same month of June. The four soccer players are joined by the discus thrower Denia Caballero, world champion in 2015 and Olympic bronze medalist in 2016, the rifle shooter Mitchell Orellana and the players of the women’s handball team Arisleydi Márquez, Yudisaday Rodríguez, Melisa Arias and Geidy Maceo, who They decided to stay in Paris, where they were conducting a training base for the Central American and Caribbean Games that are held in San Salvador.
The figure of 33 dropouts by Cuban athletes is already more than half of the 62 that were registered in the entire year 2022.
Until the closing of this note, the flight of the four soccer players had not been confirmed by the Cuban authorities.
