Hours before, security sources cited by the Syrian agency have confirmed the discovery of the bodies of nine security agents linked to the new Damascus government in the city of Barmaya, in the province of Tartús. According to these sources, “remains” of the old regime “liquidated them.

The Syrian transition authorities launched a large -scale operation on the coast of Syria last week after a series of attacks by the former president, unleashing a burst of sectarian violence that has resulted in the death of about 1,400 civilians, “most of them Alauís,” according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights.

The provinces of Latakia and Tartús also host Russia’s two mlitar bases in the country. Moscow, ally of Al Assad during the war unleashed in 2011, is discussing with the new authorities the possibility of maintaining control or management of these facilities, of geostrategic importance for Russia.
