At least four people have died and more than 8,600 have been displaced by Cyclone ‘Freddy’ passing through Madagascar, according to the African country’s National Office for Risk and Catastrophe Management.
The agency has indicated in a message on its account on the social network Facebook that ‘Freddy’ has left 16,709 victims in the areas of Vatovavy, Fitovinany, Atsimoatsinanana and Amoroni Mania.
Likewise, he stressed that nearly 2,300 homes have suffered damage, while six schools have been completely destroyed, in addition to 37 educational centers that have suffered partial damage.
The cyclone made landfall in Madagascar after causing heavy rain and flooding in Mauritius, where authorities were forced to suspend operations at the international airport due to ‘Freddy’ winds.
In January, more than 30 people died in Madagascar due to the storm ‘Cheneso’, which made landfall in the northeast of the island. Likewise, tens of thousands of people were displaced from their homes due to the rains.
