( Spanish) — The Emergency Operations Center (COE) of the Dominican Republic reported that the number of deaths from the effects of the rains recorded in Greater Santo Domingo since Friday afternoon has risen to four.
General Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the COE, revealed that the deceased belong to the National District, where urban floods were recorded.
According to a report from the Emergency Operations Center, firefighters from the National District, teams from the Humanitarian Rescue Unit and agents from the Dominican Republic Army rescued 20 children in the Cuesta Hermosa sector. In addition, firefighters were able to save three people who, as a result of heavy rains, had been trapped in an elevator in the Evaristo Morales sector.

Through a statement released on social networks, the presidency of the Dominican Republic announced that the president, Luis Abinader, suspended the activities scheduled for this Saturday to respond to those affected by the rains. Likewise, he summoned ministers and general directors in the National Palace to coordinate relief actions.
For its part, the National Meteorology Office (ONAMET) predicted that rainfall will continue with the same intensity and will only begin to decrease this Sunday. The Emergency Operations Center maintains 12 provinces on yellow alert and nine on green alert for possible flooding of rivers, streams and ravines, as well as for sudden or urban flooding.
