The death toll from the sinking of a boat on the Kwango River near the town of the same name in southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to four, according to authorities, bringing the number of missing to nearly 40.
Kwango Province Deputy Governor Rémy Sake said 79 people had been rescued so far and said an estimated 150 people were on board the ship, based on witness accounts and survivors.
“Search operations must continue despite the conditions, which are difficult,” he said, adding that they do not yet have an official document on the number of people on board, as reported by the Congolese news portal Actualité.
The boat, which had left the town of Tembo, in Kasongolunda, was heading to Kinshasa, the capital of the African country. The cause of the accident is not yet known and the authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
