Pay attention to what has happened in the United States court. Epic Games has resolved the legal case of Fortnite with the Federal Trade Commission, for which it will pay users $245 million to resolve concerns related to previous Item Shop designs and refund systems.
The developer will also pay an additional $275 million to the FTC to address privacy concerns for children in Fortnite. Although there is no mention of when these legal proceedings will take place, one thing is certain: many players will receive refunds, specifically the community in the United States.
Who will receive the Fortnite refund
Since the FTC’s legal jurisdiction is limited to the US, players from other countries will not be eligible for refunds. Not all players in the US will be eligible for refunds either. The FTC mentions selection parameters:
- Parents whose children made an unauthorized credit card purchase on the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018 (this probably applies to everything listed on the EGS)
- Players who were charged in-game currency (V-Bucks) for purchased unwanted in-game items (such as cosmetics, llamas, or battle passes) between January 2017 and September 2022
- Players whose accounts were “locked out” between January 2017 and September 2022 after attempting to dispute unauthorized charges with their credit card companies
The FTC will update the situation and the refund schedule in due course. In addition, they mentioned that the refund process is free and that they should beware of people who claim otherwise.
In all likelihood, players will be reimbursed in US dollars. Since V-Bucks are an in-game currency, they will not be used by the authorities to issue refunds.
It is unclear whether or not cosmetic items will be removed from the player’s inventory once the refund occurs. It also remains to be seen if this refund process will cause multiple users to incur negative V-Bucks.
It will take a few months to find out how the refund to the players involved is resolved.
