Former Zambian President Urges Current President To Waive His Immunity To Defend Against Theft Accusations

Sep. 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has once again urged the current president, Hakainde Hichilema, to withdraw his constitutional immunity so that he can defend himself against corruption charges against him, days after the authorities carried out a search of one of the His properties.

“I urge the president to institute the lifting of my immunity by going to Parliament to present a case so that he can eventually prove what crimes I committed,” Lungu claimed, according to statements collected by the BBC.

“Whoever denounces, must prove it and we will defend ourselves,” the former president assured a group of parliamentarians and members of his party, the Patriotic Front, currently the main opposition party.

This week, as part of an investigation, the authorities have ordered the seizure of a property belonging to former President Lungu in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, which has been seen by some as the preliminary step before withdrawing his constitutional immunity, for which that the support of two thirds of Parliament is needed.
