Former Argentine president Cristina Fernández assumed the presidency of Peronism on Wednesday, the main opposition party to the government of libertarian Javier Milei, who this week celebrated one year as president of the South American country, with high popularity ratings.
Fernández took the reins of the Justicialista Party (PJ) at an event in the capital Buenos Aires, with the intention of centralizing the leadership of the PJ, which fragmented after losing the 2023 presidential elections against Milei, until then only an eccentric economic commentator .
“I assume this presidency one year after the Milei Government,” said Fernández, who seeks to return to the center of the political scene and the PJ after occupying a secondary role in last year’s presidential elections, which had the former Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, as a PJ candidate.
The defeat against Milei caused a strong earthquake within Peronism.
Fernández was Argentine president for two consecutive terms between 2007 and 2015, and at the peak of political power she unquestioningly led Peronism, the dominant party in Argentina since its founding 80 years ago, particularly its center-left branch.
However, the former president She was convicted last month of fraud against the State by a higher court in Argentina, with other legal cases pending. And although she can still appeal to the Supreme Court, support for the political leader has been reduced in recent years to its most radical core.
