Former President Alejando Toledo will serve 18 months in preventive detention in Peru

Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo arrived in Lima on Sunday after being extradited from the United States to answer corruption charges related to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht during his 2001-2006 administration.

The plane that brought Manrique to Toledo landed around 7:02 in the morning, local time, at the Jorge Chávez international airport. From there the former president was transferred to the headquarters of the Police Aviation Directorate.

The attorney general Patricia Benavides and the director of the Peruvian Police, Jorge Angulo, were the ones who received former president Toledo, who has undergone medical examinations before appearing before a judge.

Magistrate Margarita Salcedo will take control of Toledo’s identity as part of the criminal process that is being followed for the alleged crimes of collusion and money laundering.

The former president is accused by the Prosecutor’s Office of receiving 35 million dollars from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht for sections two and three of the Interoceanic Highway.

For this serious act, Judge Richard Concepción ordered 18 months of preventive detention against Toledo in April 2017.

At the moment it is known that the former president will comply with this judicial order in the Barbadillo prison, where Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo are also being held.

Fujimori faces a sentence of 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity for the cases known as Barrios Altos and La Cantuta.

Meanwhile, Castillo is serving 54 months in pretrial detention for the failed self-coup on December 7 of last year and another case related to the Tarata-Petroperú Bridge.
