Shinzo Abe, who was Prime Minister of Japan, died this Friday, after being shot several times during a rally in the Nara region, in the west of the country.
Shinzo Abe, former Japanese chief executive, was taken to hospital after being shot several times and collapsing this Friday, July 8, while giving a speech in the city of Nara, reported the state network NHK. The same network and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) later reported that the attack was fatal for the former prime minister.
Abe, 67, was making a campaign speech at a rally ahead of next Sunday’s Senate election when shots were heard. The former premier collapsed and his neck began to bleed, a LDP source told the Jiji news agency.
The Japanese government confirmed shortly after that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had been the victim of a gun attack. “Former Prime Minister Abe was shot at around 11:30 am in Nara. A man suspected of being the shooter has been arrested,” Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.
Citing police sources, the state television network NHK indicated that a 40-year-old suspect had been arrested and that a weapon had been seized. After the shooting, the Japanese police entered the house of the alleged assailant. The press has identified him as a former member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, the Japanese military.

strict gun control
A Japanese television reporter who was at the rally during the attack recounted hearing two consecutive shots while Shinzo Abe was making his speech. Various media outlets reported they were shot in the back, likely with a rifle.
Japan has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, and the annual number of gun deaths in this country of 125 million people is extremely low. Obtaining a gun permit is a long and complicated process, even for Japanese citizens, who must first obtain a recommendation from a shooting association and then undergo strict police checks.
Abe has been Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. He was in office in 2006 for a year and again between 2012 and 2020.
