Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia

The Carter family has made it known that former first lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia, the Carter Center reported Tuesday.

Mrs. Carter, 95, remains at home with former President Jimmy Carter, who has been receiving asylum care at home since the beginning of the year.

“She continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying spring in the Plains and visits from loved ones,” reads a family statement issued by the Carter Center, the global humanitarian organization founded by the couple in 1982 after their leave the White House.

Married 77 years, the Carters are the longest-living first couple in American history.

The family noted that Rosalynn Carter during her long public life has been a leading advocate for individuals and families affected by mental illness and those caring for their loved ones.

“Mrs. Carter used to say that there are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have provided care; those who provide care, those who will provide care, and those who will need care,” the statement said.

“The universality of caregiving is clear to our family and we are experiencing the joys and challenges of this experience. We do not anticipate making any further statements and we ask for understanding for our family and for everyone in the country who fulfill the task of providing care ”

The Carters have only received visits from family and close friends in recent months, since the former president announced that he will desist from receiving medical intervention after several brief hospitalizations.
