The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran met this Thursday in Beijing, China, to discuss the process of normalizing bilateral relations after their agreement to that end in March.

In the meeting between the Iranian, Hosein Amirabdolahian, and the Saudi, Faisal bin Farhan, they discussed the practical implementation of the agreement, according to the Saudi Arabian outlet Al Ekhbariya, which has published a video in which both representatives are observed giving each other shaking hands and showing camaraderie in front of the cameras.

The meeting was also attended by a delegation from each of the countries, and according to the Iranian agency Irna there has also been talk of the future reopening of embassies and consulates in both countries.

The meeting was preceded by a total of three telephone conversations between Bin Farhan and Amirabdolahian to address the future of relations between the two countries.

Tehran and Riyadh severed diplomatic relations in 2016 following an attack on Saudi missions in Iran by protesters calling for a halt to the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr and are indirectly engaged through the war in Yemen, where Riyadh backs the Yemeni government. while Tehran does the same with the Huthi insurgency.
