In recent years, acquisitions have become a recurring theme in the video game industry. One of the companies with the most activity on this front is Embracer Group, which announced in early May the purchase of Square Enix’s western studios and franchise licenses as important as god ex Y tomb Raider. After the acquisition by the Embracer Group, Square Enix Montreal was forced to change its name for obvious reasons. After a process that lasted approximately 5 months, the studio shared its new identity this week and revealed the internal work that went into coming up with the current brand.

Meet Studio Onoma
Through a publication on its official website, the company founded in 2011 confirmed that it considered a total of 165 names. After extensive discussion with specialists and employees, he opted for “Studio Onoma”. As he explains, Onoma is a Greek word that means “name.”
“Names give life to objects, people or concepts; bring them into the real or imaginary world. It is the beginning of a new experience, an invitation to embark on a new journey. As game creators, we are creators of new experiences, of new paths. Names shape identities. When we play, we can be anyone, achieve anything, and go anywhere.”
Studio Onoma says it built the new brand to be flexible and connect with multiple audiences. He also hopes that it will allow him to expand along with the market and serve as a starting point for projects, programs and initiatives. “We are excited to start this new chapter in our story and have the opportunity to write it with you,” he concluded.
Square Enix Montreal was founded in 2011 to create high-profile video games. In 2013 he changed his focus and decided to focus on free-to-play titles. On his resume he has projects like Hitman Go, hitman sniper, Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows Y Tomb Raider Reloaded.
In August 2022, a trademark registration revealed the existence of Studio Onoma. At the time, rumors indicated that it was a new studio created by Square Enix to develop Western video games. We now know that it is the new name for SE Montreal.
