June 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least seven people have died and 50,000 have been displaced by the floods and landslides that have affected half of the country’s districts during these days, with particular severity during the last few hours.
The victims include three members of the same family who drowned in floods in Avissawella, east of the capital Colombo, and two people who were buried in a landslide in the nearby town of Ratnapura.
Sri Lanka’s security forces have been deployed to help those affected, including the evacuation of people isolated from other communities, the country’s Disaster Management Office reported in a statement reported by the national newspaper Daily Mirror.
The South Asian country has been hit by monsoon rains over the past two weeks, which intensified overnight.
All schools in Sri Lanka will remain closed on Monday.
