The local population is trying to bring tents and food, but resources are very scarce. Every day between 6 and 7 adults die, the critical situation forces people to steal. A teacher from Saiqa Rehmat: “Even the children try to help.” She continues the campaign for the displaced.
Faisalabad () – After the recent rains that have left a third of Pakistan under water, the local population has mobilized to bring aid to the flooded people. Saiqa Rehmat, 47, also involved her organization to set up tents and donate food to the displaced.
Saiqa is a teacher from Faisalabad who has been running the New Horizon Kindergarten for Christian children in Warispura since 2013. More than 60% of the students come from poor families and receive free books and uniforms. Saiqa also runs the Lok Vehar Development Organization and together with international agencies she is helping the people living in the villages affected by the floods.
He told that he had visited several places in Sindh and Baluchistan: Kashmore, Quetta, Jacobabad, Bagri and Sukkur. Every day six or seven adults and many children die from contaminated water. A tanker truck made available by the government reaches the flooded cities once a day, but the water it distributes is not enough for everyone. The living conditions of the displaced are poor because 90% of the houses and crops have been destroyed. The extreme situation has also generated a wave of crime and humanitarian operators are forced to distribute aid with police protection to avoid being attacked.
“Although we have done our best, I still think we have not done anything for these people,” Saiqa explained. “They need a lot more help, but the government does not have enough resources to help everyone. There is a lack of food, tents, mosquito nets, mats and medicines. We need the help of the international community.”
The main victims are women: “According to reports, there are 45,000 pregnant women who need assistance and do not receive adequate medical care,” Saiqa continued. Meanwhile, prices for consumer goods have quadrupled and some traders are trying to take advantage of the situation.
Even the little ones try to make their contribution. “The students of our school have made postcards and messages of peace for the children affected by the flood, to express solidarity and closeness, said the teacher. “We will take them to the children of southern Punjab in the coming days.”
