Flood deaths in eastern DR Congo rise to 176

The deaths in the latest floods in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) rise to 176, in addition to leaving more than 100 missing and 57 injured and it is feared that the number will increase in the last hours as rescue efforts continue and recovery, according to local civil society sources.

“The regional government will finance the expenses of the funerals and the wounded. Medicines, accommodation, food and other items have already been delivered to the place,” said the governor of the Congolese province of South Kivu, Théo Ngwabidje Kasi, in a message on his Twitter account in which he also provided this new balance.

However, a member of local civil society, Kasole Martin, has assured that at least 227 bodies have been found, according to Al Jazeera.

The floods and the consequent landslides have devastated in particular the state of South Kivu, right now the scene of a new rainy season that will continue throughout most of this month.

Neighboring countries such as Rwanda and Uganda have also suffered heavy flooding that has left at least 127 and six dead, respectively.
