Five teenagers charged with terrorism after attack on church in Sydney, Australia

April 25 () –

The Australian authorities have charged this Thursday with terrorism charges five teenagers detained in the framework of the investigations opened after the attack with a knife perpetrated last week by a minor in a church, an event that left four injured, including the priest who officiated the mass.

“Five minors have been charged while the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team (JCTT) continues to investigate those linked to the alleged suspect who carried out the stabbing at a church in Wakeley,” the Police said in a statement, a day after the arrest of seven people for their alleged relationship with the attacker.

Thus, he detailed that two adolescents, aged 14 and 17, have been charged with “possession or control of violent extremist material obtained using a delivery service”, while two other detainees aged 16 have been accused of “conspiring to participate in a act of preparation or planning of a terrorist act”.

They are joined by a 17-year-old teenager who has been charged with “conspiring to participate in an act of preparation or planning of a terrorist act” and for “possession of a knife in a public place.” The authorities have rejected the possibility of releasing them on bail.

The Australian Police stated last week that they were investigating what happened as a “terrorist act” and added that the 16-year-old detainee was known to the authorities, although “he has not been on any terrorist watch list.” The event took place days after the death of six people in another knife attack in a shopping center in Sydney, although it was ruled out that it was a terrorist attack.
