The Police of the Philippine capital, Manila, has confirmed that five of its active members are allegedly detained for robbery and extortion for an incident that occurred on July 11 inside an electronics store.
The store owner has explained that six armed suspects, dressed in civilian clothes, entered his store and presented themselves as police officers carrying out an operation against illegal online gambling, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Manila Times’.
“They demanded and took the money worth 40,000 Philippine pesos (about 650 euros) from the owner in exchange for not being arrested for illegal gambling. They demanded that he give them 4,000 pesos (about 65 euros) every Friday as weekly protection money. They also they took 3,500 pesos (about 57 euros) from the counter table and a 500 GB hard drive containing the images from the surveillance camera before leaving said computer store,” according to the police report.
Upon receiving the complaint, the director of the Manila Police ordered the formation of a special investigation team that carried out an operation that ended with the arrest of the five police officers, all members of the Police Intelligence Operations Unit. of the District (DPIOU), and a civilian who was with them in the store.
“The Manila Police Force is committed to further intensifying the campaign against uniformed criminals and the intensified implementation of the PNP (Philippine National Police) Clean-Up Program. We will not tolerate any illegal activities from our police officers. Please be assured that the director of the Manila Police will act appropriately with due process in all complaints against roving police personnel,” explained the head of this body.
