June 30. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tunisian authorities have announced the death of five people and the rescue of more than a hundred after intercepting three boats that were trying to complete the journey through the Mediterranean Sea to reach European shores.

The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior has detailed in a brief statement published on its website that “Coast Guard units managed to prevent three illegal crossings of the maritime borders” and has indicated that the operations resulted in “the rescue of 108 people from different African nationalities” and “the recovery of five bodies after their boats sank”.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) collects on its website that so far this year nearly 900 people have died or have been reported missing when trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European shores, a figure that in 2021 rose to 2,048, above the data for 2020 and 2019.
