Five artisanal gold prospectors have been killed and two more injured by a landslide on Saturday at the Gangala mine in Djugu territory in Ituri province.
The victims are young people who illegally entered the exploitation to extract gold ore who were surprised by the fall of a clod that buried them when an intervention was carried out to plug several wells.
“This decision was made last week by the Local Security Council with the aim of combating the illegal exploitation of minerals in various deposits that represent a danger to the population,” said the mayor of the rural commune of Mongwalu.
The bodies of the deceased were extracted thanks to the collaboration of the population. The injured were taken to Mongbwalu hospital for treatment.
