Five civilians killed and four children kidnapped in an attack blamed on the ADF in eastern DRC

Sep. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least five civilians were killed in an attack carried out late on Wednesday by suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) against a town located in the province of North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to The authorities confirmed this Thursday.

Civil society sources quoted by the Congolese news portal Actualité have detailed that the attack was carried out around 9:00 p.m. (local time) against the Bulongo commune, located in the Beni territory, before adding that four minor children five-year-olds were kidnapped by the assailants.

The Congolese Army has confirmed the death toll and has assured that it has killed two members of the ADF in the operation launched in response, which has also resulted in the seizure of two Kalashnikov-type assault rifles.

The ADF, a Ugandan group created in the 1990s, especially active in eastern DRC and accused of the killing of hundreds of civilians in this part of the country, could be trying to operate again in Uganda, from where it withdrew in 2003. after a series of military operations that drastically reduced its ability to carry out attacks in the country.

The group suffered a split in 2019 after Musa Baluku — sanctioned by the United Nations and the United States — swore allegiance to the jihadist group Islamic State in Central Africa (ISCA), under whose banner it has been operating ever since. The DRC and Uganda signed a defense agreement in December to carry out joint operations in eastern DRC.
