First patient dies in Mexico from Fusarium solani fungus infection

( Spanish) — The Ministry of Health of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas reported the first death of a patient due to infection of the central nervous system, caused by the fungus Fusarium solani. The woman was admitted to a private clinic in the city of Matamoros.

The Secretary of Health of Tamaulipas, Vicente Joel Hernández Navarro, said that “despite the medical efforts and the application of medications, the patient’s health worsened as the days went by.”

He explained that, so far in the entity, there are 24 cases of this infection “we had six people hospitalized, two are in the Victoria High Specialty Hospital, who were transferred for follow-up; they are not serious, one more was the patient in the private hospital, and the rest are in different medical institutions under strict surveillance and medical attention,” said Hernández Navarro.

He stressed that the investigation into the causes that led to this situation is carried out by the Attorney General’s Office.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, the fungus Fusarium solani can cause skin gland infections, onychomycosis, keratitis, and endolphthalmitis.
