First conversation on female leadership in the geospatial field: Challenges and opportunities

Women, girls and adolescents represent half of the world’s population and their empowerment is crucial for sustainable development and gender equality. Although female empowerment fosters innovation and economic growth, gender inequality persists, limiting the rights and opportunities of women and girls. According to the report SDG 2023progress towards gender equality (SDG 5) is limited, with only 15.4% of the indicators on track. If this pace continues, it is estimated that it will take 140 years to achieve equal representation of women in workplace leadership.

UN Women works in key areas such as participation in governance, economic autonomy, the eradication of violence and the female contribution to peace and resilience. In the geospatial sector, women are underrepresented and face persistent barriers to their professional development. To address this, UN-GGIM: Americas adopted Resolution 10/10, committing to promote an inclusive environment and recognize the contributions of women in this field.

In line with this commitment, UN-GGIM: Americas organized a discussion on female leadership in geospatial, with the participation of leaders from organizations such as Women+ in Geospatial and Geogirls. This event seeks to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of women leaders, share experiences and promote strategies to promote equity and inclusion in the sector.
