MADRID Dec. 28 () –
The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has offered his country to host a future peace negotiation between Ukraine and Russia, an offer that the Kremlin has described as “one of the options.”
“If someone tells us that they want to organize peace negotiations in Slovakia on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, they can count on our hospitality,” Fico said in a video message published on social media on Friday.
Fico himself has explained that he discussed the proposal with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, when he met with him last Sunday during a surprise visit to Moscow and has highlighted his satisfaction with the Russian president’s positive reaction.
Putin himself valued the initiative this Friday, but this Saturday the Kremlin’s official spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has downplayed its relevance, claiming that it is “one option” among others.
“No. It is an option. It is not the only option. We are talking about countries that maintain a neutral stance and talk equally with kyiv and Moscow. There are quite few countries like that,” Peskov said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Peskov has highlighted the peace initiatives of several countries. “We maintain good and constructive relations with our colleagues in these countries,” but he has argued that the first thing at this moment would be to open a peace process.
