El Salvador does not officially register a high entry of Venezuelan migrants affected by the new immigration measures of the United States, since President Nayib Bukele broke diplomatic relations with the Nicolás Maduro regime since 2019.
Fernando Jiménez, a member of the Association of Venezuelans in El Salvador, explains that until today they have only had a consultation from one person who is in the group of stranded but has a Salvadoran visa.
“We have not had this type of request, because the main issue is the true visa to enter El Salvador here and also the people who go in this process from Darién to the United States do not go through El Salvador,” he said.
Jiménez pointed out that the route that the migrant travels when he leaves Venezuela as an undocumented person to reach the United States, does not go through El Salvador, since the South Americans head towards Nicaragua, then to Honduras and Guatemala to travel to Mexico.
César Ríos, president of the Salvadoran Institute for Migrant Assistance, INSAMI, does not rule out that Venezuelans stranded or deported from the United States within the framework of the new provisions that have left them practically in a “limbo”, may seek El Salvador as a destination.
“International law allows a Venezuelan to request asylum and refuge here, regardless of whether there are no diplomatic relations. According to international agreements, the country must provide protection to any citizen who requests it, regardless of whether or not there are relations.”
The voice of america spokespersons from the General Directorate of Immigration and Immigration were consulted about Venezuelans who have been located by the border police and the government entity reported that it does not record relevant information in this regard.
