The program, accredited until 2027, has a solid academic body, including Fernando Lanas, who stands out for his career, lines of research, and number of publications.

Millaray Mariqueo, Science in Chile.- He programcreated 25 years ago, has as objectives train health professionals with skills in clinical research, health management and evidence-based decision-making.

Fernando Lanas Zanetti is Surgeon, specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Master of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, Doctor of Research Methodology and Public Health from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. And currently he participates in the Clinical Epidemiology and Design modules and collaborates in the thesis tutoring process within the program.

Fernando mentions that one of the characteristics that differentiates this program is that it is aimed at health professionals in their clinical work, rather than public health.

The academic currently develops his lines of research around cardiovascular diseases, “I do not have an exclusive research area, since I am interested in various topics, I am the researcher with the highest number of citations in Chile, I have more than 340 indexed publications and they are from Basic Science research with molecular biology methods to epidemiological studies.

His penultimate research was on certain genetic differences in subjects who had coronary artery disease revascularized with angioplasty, since a percentage of them generate an obstruction again and others do not. “In the last Fondecyt we hypothesized that the mediator between coronary events and air pollution were changes in DNA function induced by pollution, which is called epigenetics. Temuco has the peculiarity that in winter it has a lot of pollution and in summer it has very little, and heart attack episodes increase a lot in winter, so the phenomenon can be studied in the presence and absence of pollution.” To do this, they compared the chemical, biochemical and biological markers of inflammation characteristics in the subjects who had coronary symptoms outside the contamination period and during the contamination period.

Fernando also participates in an international study to identify characteristics of subjects from the general population that are associated with the appearance of diseases in Chile and the world, “this was a very productive study since its results have impacted on health policies at a national level. world”.

In addition, the researcher is in charge of coordinating clinical trials, for Chile he has coordinated about 20 clinical trials of many drugs that are now in use such as new anticoagulants or diabetes drugs.

Fernando highlighted the importance of epidemiology, since it provides tools to health professionals, to carry out a better clinical activity, because it allows a deeper understanding of certain clinical cases and the application of scientific reasoning in decision-making. This is Valid for any health professional, be it a doctor, dentist, kinesiologist, nurse or others.

On the other hand, it stands out that this program teaches you methodology to plan, execute or manage research, know its limitations, quantify the benefits, “if someone is interested in doing a better job as a professional or being a researcher in some area of the health, that is what our program gives you” he concluded.
