MADRID 5 Nov. () –
The Swedish Justice has sentenced the Swedish-Danish far-right Rasmus Paludan to four months in prison this Tuesday for inciting hatred against certain ethnic groups by publicly burning copies of the Koran and making “offensive” comments against the Muslim community.
Paludan, who became the first person to be tried in the country for burning a Koran during a demonstration, is now the first to be convicted for these actions, although it is still unknown if he will ultimately go to prison.
The leader of the Danish far-right political party Stram Kurs (Hard Line) has been convicted by a Malmo district court after being indicted on two charges related to a case dating back to 2022. In addition, he will have to pay about 80,800 crowns ( about 5,700 euros) in compensation for the damages caused.
The judges have indicated that, although “it is permitted to publicly make comments critical of Islam and Muslims, (…) the line established for a valid discussion must not be crossed,” according to the newspaper ‘Aftonbladet’.
In April 2022, Paludan placed a slice of bacon on a copy of the Koran which he later set on fire, an attitude that sparked widespread criticism and which he repeated on several occasions – both in front of mosques and the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm – .
