Consuelo Martínez, Journalist.- As of December of this year and for the first time on the coast of Valdivia, people who visit the Calfuco Coastal Aquatic Resources Laboratory (LCRAC) will be able to access the exhibition: “Kallfüko, immerse yourself in the Valdivian coast” developed by the Faculty of Sciences of the Austral University of Chile (UACh) and its Unit of Links with the Environment. The project is financed by the Public Science Program of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation in the Public Space for Disclosure category.
The permanent exhibition will cover different areas of Marine Sciences, through a tour that will value the marine heritage of the Valdivian coast with the aim of socializing scientific knowledge with a gender perspective and bringing science closer to the community to promote the scientific tourism in the region.
The tour will be made up of eight modules that form a route of experiential stations that connect marine diversity and its ecological interactions, ecosystem services and the cultural heritage of coastal communities, through co-design work with academics from the Institute of Marine and Limnological Sciences (ICML) of the UACh and local organizations, who will share their ways of life and experiences with the sea.
Work meetings have already been established with the Departments of the Environment, Women and Gender Equity of Los Ríos and the Municipality of Corral to jointly articulate the scope and accessibility of the sample. During the month of April the meetings will continue with the Neighborhood Associations No. 22 Los Pellines and Guarda Pichitraiguen de Curiñanco and on May 25 the project will be launched with an activity open to the community that will feature an open talk by the renowned underwater photographer Eduardo Sorensen, the presentation of the organizations and institutions that participate in the co-design and development of this exhibition and a photographic contest on social networks.
Leyla Cárdenas, dean of the Faculty of Sciences, explained that “our faculty has not only been a pioneer in developing and measuring the gender footprint, but also in awarding the National Public Science Contest for the Development of Public Spaces for the dissemination scientific. We want to connect with the community in a closer way, opening our laboratory and sharing scientific knowledge. We want to contribute to the Los Ríos Region in the development of scientific tourism and disseminate to visitors the vital importance they have in caring for the oceans so that as humanity we can successfully face Climate Change”.
