The Iranian authorities have executed this Friday three people convicted in connection with the riots registered in the framework of the demonstrations unleashed in September after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman detained in Tehran for allegedly wearing the wrong dress. veil.

According to information collected by the Iranian news agency Mehr, those executed are Mayid Kazemi, Salé Mirhashemi and Said Yaqubi, all of whom were sentenced to hang for the death of three members of the security forces in a “terrorist attack” carried out in November in the city of Isfahan.

The executions have been carried out after the Supreme Court ratified the sentences, about two weeks after the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, indicated that the authorities had executed more than 200 people in so far this year, a figure he considered “terrifying.”

Likewise, the non-governmental organizations Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) indicated in April that Iran executed 582 people by hanging in 2022. The NGOs stressed that the figure is the highest since 2015 and they stated that the objective of the Iranian government is to “instill fear in order to cling to power”.

The demonstrations following the death of Amini resulted in around 470 deaths, according to NGOs, and, although the Iranian authorities have acknowledged specific excesses by the security forces, they have assured that these protests have been fueled by “rioters” and foreign powers.
