This Monday, more than 30 former presidents asked the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, to “urgently” advance “diplomatic efforts” for the “restoration of democracy” in Venezuela and complete the swearing-in of the leader. opponent, Edmundo González Urrutia.
“Only in this way will the democracies of the Americas be able to guarantee their own stabilities and safeguard the democratic heritage that serves as support and justification for the Inter-American System,” stated a statement from the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA Group).
Venezuela left the OAS in April 2019, after the Maduro government denounced the OAS Charter, the organization’s founding document, in 2017.
Several former presidents who are members of the IDEA Group accompanied González Urrutia, an opposition leader who is credited with the victory in the presidential elections of July 28, on a regional tour that he hoped to culminate on January 10 with his return to Venezuela to take office as president of the Republic.
But, it was the ruler Nicolás Maduro who assumed a third term.
Both Maduro and González Urrutia, recognized as president-elect by several governments, claim victory in the presidential elections on July 28.
Despite the insistence of the international community that requested transparent and verifiable results, the electoral body did not disclose disaggregated data, but the opposition published minutes that its table witnesses kept.
Several former leaders of the IDEA Group had planned to accompany González Urrutia to Venezuela, but the Maduro government threatened them with being treated as “invaders.”
