Many European leaders on Sunday expressed their gratitude to US President Joe Biden, who announced his withdrawal from the presidential race for his work at the head of the country and his efforts to strengthen NATO in a context of great tensions with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
“My friend Joe Biden has achieved a lot for his country, for Europe and for the world. Thanks to him, transatlantic cooperation is closer, NATO is stronger and the United States is a good and reliable partner for us. His decision not to run again deserves respect,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on his social media account X.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed his “respect” for a decision based on “what he believes is best” for his country, and has expressed his desire to continue working with him for the remainder of his term in office.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has responded in a similar way, highlighting that the “difficult decisions” taken by Biden have “made things safer” and “strengthened democracy” in Poland, the United States and the rest of the world.
“Dear President Biden, you have made many difficult decisions that have made Poland, the United States and the world safer and made democracy stronger. I know you were motivated by the same things when you announced your final decision. Probably the most difficult of your life,” he said on his X account.
The Czech Prime Minister also acknowledged that it was “a responsible and personally difficult step” and praised the “decision of a statesman.”
Finally, he hoped that the United States would see the victory of a “good president in the democratic competition between two strong and equal candidates.”
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris also expressed his gratitude to Biden, describing the US president as “the voice of reason, of multilateralism and of shared solutions” in the face of the “horrible” Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Biden has withdrawn from the race for the White House in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris, who has already submitted her official candidacy to the Federal Election Commission, which must be endorsed at the Democratic National Convention to be held next August.
