EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has criticised Israel’s “nonsensical” legislative initiative to declare the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) a terrorist organisation.
“Outlawing UNRWA and designating it as a terrorist organization, which it is not, means attacking regional stability and the human dignity of all those who benefit from the work of the United Nations agency,” Borrell said on his X account.
“We join the many partners who have called on the Israeli government to stop this nonsense,” added the head of European diplomacy.
The Knesset, or Israeli parliament, approved last Monday in a first reading the declaration of UNRWA as a terrorist organization and the severing of all ties between the agency and the State of Israel, both direct and indirect.
The Law to Sever the State of Israel’s Relations with UNRWA and Declare it a Terrorist Organization on the grounds that the agency’s employees were involved in the attack of October 7, 2023.
