Reiterates that its observers have witnessed irregularities in the presidential elections and “unjustified alterations” of its results
Dec. 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union has “taken note” this Tuesday of the ratification announced by the Constitutional Council in Mozambique that has declared Daniel Chapo as president of the country.
Chapo was the candidate of the historic Mozambique Liberation Front party, in power for half a century, and has assumed power after elections that occurred in enormous electoral violence that left more than a hundred dead.
The EU, in this regard, has declared itself “extremely concerned by the post-election violence and deplores the considerable loss of life that has occurred so far.”
In this context, Brussels “urges all parties to maintain restraint and refrain from any action that could further exacerbate tensions” and calls for accountability against those responsible for human rights violations.
The EU reiterates that its observers have detected irregularities during the elections in the vote count and noted “unjustified alterations” of the electoral results.
This is why Brussels once again asks the electoral bodies for “maximum transparency in the counting and tabulation process,” and recommends that the president-elect “rapidly engage in a constructive dialogue with the opposition in order to reestablish the social contract and defend democratic values and human rights”.
