The High Representative of the Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, has warned this Sunday that Brussels could impose new sanctions on Russia if it finally sends nuclear weapons to Belarus.
“If Belarus embraces Russian nuclear weapons it would be an irresponsible escalation and a threat to European security,” Borreel said in a message posted on Twitter.
“Belarus can still prevent it. It is their choice. The EU is ready to respond with more sanctions,” Borrell added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday an agreement with Belarus for the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil in response to Britain’s intention to supply depleted uranium weapons to the Ukrainian military.
