EU releases €1 million in aid after massive fire in Bangladesh's Royingya refugee camp

March 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has announced this Friday that it will allocate one million euros in emergency aid for those affected by the huge fire that occurred last weekend in the Rohingya refugee camp of Cox’s Bazar, in Bangladesh, which has left at least 12,000 homeless people.

The European Union warns that the fire has had “devastating consequences” for the occupants of one of the largest refugee camps in the world, the main home of a minority that led, in 2017, an exodus of almost a million people who fled from a crackdown campaign by the Burmese army in his home state of Rakhine.

The aid will go towards emergency repair tasks, particularly in the affected water purification facilities, shelters, latrines and the prevention of disease outbreaks.

The European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, recalled that both the European bloc and the International Organization for Migration have reacted quickly to the fire by arriving at the scene of immediate response teams to deal with to those affected.
