Latest news today on the war between Russia and Ukraine
BRUSSELS, Nov. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The foreign ministers of the European Union will discuss this Monday the situation of the war in Ukraine, with the advances of the Ukrainian troops in Kherson, in a meeting in which they will give the go-ahead to new sanctions against Iran for the repression of the protests against the regime of the ayatollahs after the death of the young Masha Amini, in police custody.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council will have the participation by videoconference of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dimitro Kuleba, at a time when the European partners are looking towards 2023 with the idea of guaranteeing funds and support for kyiv, with the imminent implementation underway of the military training mission of the Ukrainian Army.
Diplomatic sources point out that it is important to take stock and “put everything together”, reiterating support for Ukraine on all fronts. The meeting will serve to insist on sanctions, in addition to stressing the strategy of diplomatically isolating Russia and seeking alliances with international partners so that they align themselves in the conflict in Ukraine.
After news has circulated in recent weeks that the United States has asked the Ukrainian authorities not to close the door on negotiations with Russia, in Brussels they insist that there is unity in the Western world in that kyiv is the main actor at this time and it is only up to the Ukrainians to decide when to enter a negotiating table.
“There will be peace talks and a ceasefire, yes, but in the West we are united in the idea that it is up to Ukraine to decide the moment and we will help,” a senior EU official said.
Other diplomatic sources reiterate the message that Ukraine is “in the driving seat” and it is not the role of European capitals “to push to the negotiating table where they have to make concessions.”
On the other hand, the foreign ministers will have the situation in Iran on the table and will approve new sanctions against people and entities responsible for the wave of repression in Tehran for the death of the young Masha Amini.
As confirmed by various sources to Europa Press, the sanctions will affect around thirty individuals and entities involved in the violent repression of demonstrations in Iran. The measures will see the light on Monday in the framework of the meeting of EU foreign ministers, after the agreement at the level of ambassadors of the Twenty-seven.
The EU continues to collect information on Tehran’s military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict and has already warned that it will redouble the sanctions if it confirms the supply of ballistic missiles to Moscow.
“If the shipment is proven, we will take serious action, in the form of sanctions,” the senior European official has advanced.
