EU expresses "satisfaction and relief" over the release of 135 "political prisoners" in Nicaragua

September 7 () –

The European Union on Friday expressed its “satisfaction and relief” at the release and deportation of 135 “political prisoners” in Nicaragua, and urged the government of Daniel Ortega to take further action in this direction, including the restoration of fundamental freedoms.

The European Union’s External Action Service has described this decision as a “positive step” that should precede “new actions” by the Nicaraguan authorities, who have been asked to release the remaining “political prisoners.”

In a brief statement, the bloc’s foreign ministry spokesman praised the “key efforts” of the United States, which had acted as mediator in the process announced on Thursday, and of Guatemala, the country to which the prisoners, all of Nicaraguan nationality, were transferred.

The EU has assured that it “remains open to dialogue” with the Government of Daniel Ortega, whom it has called on to “restore fundamental freedoms and respect the right to freedom of expression and dissent in the country.”
