The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned this Sunday the decree recently issued by the authorities established by the Taliban in Afghanistan that prohibits women from working in NGOs.
“The EU is appalled by these decisions, which add to the Taliban’s previous restrictions on women’s ability and right to work, receive education and, as has been repeatedly stressed by the entire international community, constitute a clear violation of its Human Rights,” he said.
Borrell has expressed that this decision supposes “an erasure of women” in Afghan society. Likewise, she recalled that some 30 million people “depend on humanitarian aid, including food and medical assistance, to survive.”
“Women have a particularly important role in providing assistance to other women. Restricting their participation in this critical work will prevent the provision of such assistance to a large part of the population, including widows, female-headed households and children. “, has sentenced.
Finally, the High Representative has asked the ‘de facto’ authorities to lift their decision “immediately” and has warned that the EU “will assess the impact” and “consequences” of the recent actions taken by the Taliban.
Afghanistan’s Taliban-ruled Economy Ministry issued a decree on Saturday ordering all NGOs, whether national or international, to suspend women’s employment contracts until further notice.
The reason given by the Taliban authorities was the non-compliance by the employees of the Government regulations regarding the hijab, the veil that women must wear in public, the DPA agency reported.
This measure occurs in the same week that the Ministry of Education prohibited access to university education for women, also alleging non-compliance with the dress code, among other alleged violations of the law.
The decision has received criticism from the international community, including much of the Islamic world. The Taliban announced on Friday the opening of an internal debate to discuss these criticisms received.
