EU asks Mozambique's electoral body to publish disaggregated results amid allegations of fraud

This Thursday, the European Union called on the National Electoral Council of Mozambique to publish the disaggregated results to improve transparency following reports of electoral fraud in the presidential elections on October 9 in which it proclaimed Daniel Chapo, the government’s candidate, the winner. Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), with 70.67 percent of the votes.

“We urge the CNE to publish the results broken down by polling station on its website. This would not only greatly improve the transparency of the electoral process, but would also act as a safeguard for the integrity of the results,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson. the EU, Nabila Massrali, in statements to Europa Press.

In this sense, the European bloc expresses its concern about the violence unleashed in anti-government demonstrations, encouraged by the opposition that denounces electoral fraud by Frelimo.

“We remember that any concerns or challenges to the election results must be resolved peacefully through existing legal mechanisms,” Massrali stressed.

The mobilizations have paralyzed the capital, Maputo, where security forces have charged against protesters in recent days. The NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned the attacks on journalists reporting on the protests, although the Mozambican government has denied that the press was shot at.

These demonstrations come after allegations of fraud and the EU’s own electoral observation mission denouncing “irregularities” during the recount and the “unjustified alteration of electoral results” in some polling stations.

According to the results published by the CNE, the official candidate won with 70 percent of the vote, while the opposition candidate of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Vamos), Venancio Mondlane, came in second place. with 20.32 percent.
