The European Union and the United States have reprimanded this Tuesday the Radical right-wing Government of Law and Justice in Poland by the recently approved law to investigate Russia’s interference in the country’s security for the last fifteen years.
Brussels and Washington denounce that the real objective of this rule is to prevent the opposition candidate, Donald Tusk, who was president of the European Council between 2014 and 2019, stands for the elections scheduled for October or November. In fact, his political formation, Civic Platform, attached to the European People’s Party, has baptized it as ‘Lex Tusk’.
“The European Commission is very worried for the adoption of a new law in Poland that creates a special committee to investigate Russian influence on the internal security of Poland between 2007 and 2022″, said the Community Executive in a unusual statement due to its forcefulness.
Brussels fears that the rule “could be used to prevent certain people from running for public office, without a fair trial.” “The European Commission is currently analyzing this new law and will not hesitate to take the immediate measures that are necessary”concludes the brief statement.
For his part, the spokesman for the US State Department has stated that the new law “could misused to interfere with free and fair elections in Poland”. “We share the concerns expressed by many observers that this law creating a commission to investigate Russian influence could be used to block opposition politicians from running without a fair trial,” he said.
“We call on the Government of Poland to ensure that this law does not nullify the ability of voters to vote for the candidate of their choice and that it not be invoked or abused in a way that could affect the legitimacy of elections,” the State Department said.
The Government of Law and Justice argues that the Civic Platform allowed Poland became dangerously dependent on Russian fossil fuels during Donald Tusk’s time as prime minister, between 2007 and 2014. And it has raised suspicions that members of the liberal opposition may have been under Moscow’s control.
