MADRID Jan. 2 () –
The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kristen Michal, indicated this Thursday that NATO member countries plan to increase their presence in the Baltic Sea area following the latest incidents related to several damaged submarine cables.
Although he has indicated that the exact details of this deployment will not be known until the pertinent decisions are made, the president has regretted the damage caused to “vitally important underwater infrastructure.” “These are fundamental steps,” he stated.
Likewise, he has expressed his satisfaction at the start of the search work by the Finnish forces of the freighter ‘Eagle S’, suspected of being part of the Russian shadow fleet and having caused damage to a cable that runs from Finland to Estonia. “We are willing to do the same,” he clarified.
On December 25, the Estonian gas and electricity operator Elering suffered a blackout due to damage to the EstLink2 cable. Since then, Finnish authorities have intercepted the ship pending the completion of the relevant investigations.
NATO has offered help to both countries in relation to the case, while the European Union has advocated increasing measures to improve the security of these ships in the Baltic in the face of possible Russian threats.
