Erdogan signs the decree certifying the holding of general elections on May 14 in Turkey

March 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has signed this Friday the decree that certifies the date of May 14 as the day of holding the presidential and legislative elections in the country, after several weeks of doubts due to the impact caused by the earthquakes last month in the south of the country.

Erdogan, however, and in accordance with the decree collected by ‘Hurriyet’, has ended up holding firm on the original date advanced a few months ago by members of his Justice and Development party (AKP) to hold elections in which he will end up running for a new term despite the serious doubts expressed by the opposition about the legality of this decision.

The coalition formed by the National Alliance, Turkey’s main opposition coalition, questioned that Erdogan was committing an irregularity by running again for the elections, because he has already served the two terms stipulated by the Constitution by winning the 2014 and 2018 elections.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has stuck to the legal interpretation offered by his party, understanding that he has only served one term, the one he received in 2018, because the country’s political transformation to a presidential model the previous year represented a blur and a blur. new account on the times of stay in power.

In principle, the president has hinted that this will be the last time he will stand in the elections before leaving the country in the hands of “a new generation” when his hypothetical term ends, if he is victorious, and thus put an end to more than 20 years at the head of the country, either as prime minister or president.

Facing him will be, as his main rival, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, the leader of the main opposition party, the nationalist Republican People’s Party (CHP), elected on Monday by the National Alliance coalition, of which his party is a part together the Happiness Party, the Iyi Party –Good Party–, the Future Party, the DEVA Party –Democracy and Progress Party– and the Democratic Party.
