Threatens military intervention after local elections in the Syrian Kurdish autonomous region
June 2 () –
The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has warned that the local elections called for June 11 in the Rojava region or Syrian Kurdistan that he considers a hoax to proclaim Syria’s independence and become a “terrorist state.”
“We are closely monitoring the provocations disguised as a referendum by the terrorist organization, which threatens both our land and the sovereignty of Syria,” Erdogan said, according to the news portal Medya News.
“Turkey will never allow the creation of a terrorist state in northern Syria and Iraq. We have taken the necessary measures against any fait accompli and we will not hesitate to act if the situation arises again,” he assured.
Erdogan has referred to the performance of the Syrian Kurdish-Arab militias in the defeat of the Islamic State, but has stressed that “the pretext of fighting against the Islamic State no longer has any weight for us.”
The June 11 elections are called in the provinces of Hasaka, Raqqa, Deir Ezzor and eastern Aleppo. From that area, a joint statement from 33 parties have denounced the “continuous threats” of the “Turkish regime” regarding intervention and have stressed that none of the parties participating in the elections have the secession of Syria in their program.
“The political parties and forces that sign this declaration confirm that there is no intention to separate from Syria in the autonomous administration project that we have created, but that we always ask to preserve and defend its unity,” they highlighted.
