In the United States they will now be able to ban abortion. The door was opened this Friday by the Supreme Court of Justice, when six of the nine judges voted in favor of revoking the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy that applied to the entire country since 1973, with the historic case of ‘Roe vs. Wade’. From now on, the decision on this right will depend on each state. In this edition of El Debate we analyze what is coming for the US after this historic ruling.
Former President Donald Trump celebrated the ruling, saying it was “God’s doing.” While President Joe Biden not only supports abortion, he also reacted by openly opposing the decision made by the Supreme Court of Justice and invited the protests to continue peacefully. In addition, he warned that his government will try to find ways to protect this right.
The different positions mark an evident truth: abortion will be the determining issue in the midterm elections in November, in which the Republicans and the Democrats fight to win a majority in Congress. Will abortion be banned in the entire United States? What will happen to this right? How much will it impact future elections? We analyze this topic from the hand of our guests:
– Paula Ávila, executive director of the ‘Women’s Equality Center’ and women’s rights lawyer.
– Julieth Gómez, pro-life activist, lawyer and director of the ‘Organización Colombiana Damas Celestes’.
