Emma Reyes, posthumous literary celebrity with 'Correspondence Memory'

First modification:

One of the best-selling Colombian books for some years in that country and abroad is entitled ‘Memory by correspondence’ written by Emma Reyes, a plastic artist who died in 2003, in Bordeaux, at the age of 84. In the book she recounts her childhood in a poor Colombian family at the beginning of the 20th century.

The best-selling book by Emma Reyes (1919-2003) may seem strange because it uses the epistolary genre, which scares away many readers. Also, she was a plastic artist, not a writer.

Another unusual fact for a book written by a South American is that the work begins by evoking a very precise date in the history of France: April 28, 1969.

On that date, General de Gaulle left the presidency after losing a referendum on a reform of the Senate.

That event, curiously, triggers the author’s memory of her own childhood. The story of those years, in a poor family at the beginning of the 20th century in the departments of Cundinamarca and Boyacá, is exciting, without the slightest attempt to embellish a bloody reality, but without letting the moments of joy escape either.

That book was one of the recommendations that the bookseller Rodrigo Puerto from the bookstore gave us. turntable in Bogota.

We also interview Argentine journalist Eduardo Aulicino about the case of Cristina Kirchner, the Argentine vice president who has been accused of corruption. The prosecution asked for 12 years in prison.

We pay tribute to Radio Paris La Paz for its 25 years. We will speak with Jimmy Vázquez, founder and director of that station, which is part of RFI’s network of FM stations.
