Welsh Health Minister Eluned Morgan is set to become the new leader of the Welsh Labour Party and will also be the first woman to serve as First Minister after being the only candidate to replace Vaughan Gething in the role after he announced his resignation last week.
Gething resigned from his post as head of government and leader of the Welsh Labour Party on Tuesday, just four months after winning the primary elections and losing a vote of no confidence which, although it did not force him to leave office, made clear his lack of support.
Following this upheaval in the Welsh Labour Party – just a few days after the also Labour Party member Keir Starmer won the British parliamentary elections – the party began a process of succession for Gething that, in principle, was to last at least two months.
The deadline for registration of candidates ended on Wednesday morning, with Baroness Morgan as the only candidate. The Labour Party has the most seats in Parliament (Senedd) but does not have a majority, so Morgan is expected to be elected First Minister.
Morgan, who currently serves as Health Minister in the Gething Government – which will remain in the post until a successor is appointed – began her political career three decades ago, when at just 27 she became the youngest member of the European Parliament.
